Spicy Pulled Jackfruit Arepas

These jackfruit-stuffed arepas are inspired by the vibrant flavours of Latin American cuisine, where arepas are a beloved staple. The crispy, soft cornmeal base is filled with smoky, tender jackfruit, creamy guacamole, tangy pickled onions, and salty vegan cheese. It's the perfect combination of textures and bold flavours!

Made & ate any kind of Arepas for the first time. It was yummy (but I think I'll take the lazy road and would switch out the Arepas for wraps on the future). Also made & ate refried beans for the first time - also yummy! OH.. and since I cannot get these "Chipotle peppers in Adobo Sauce" here so easily, I googled it and swapped it out with some special concoction (containing tomatopaste, ajvar, chopped jalapeƱos from a jar & the brew from said jar, aswell as a bit of vinegar & brew from the pickled onions - cayenne pepper & smoked paprika since i learned that it is kind of spicy, sour and smoked - so, PUL, if you wanna drop a recipe how to recreate those peppers at home, for us who can't buy them in stores, that might be cool) and even though it probably tasted quite different, it still turned out great.
Also, I chopped up half a tomato & some cucumber up and put it into the arepas, so there was a bit more freshness and crunch. It was very tasty and quite filling! :)

Ahh what a fun first arepa adventure, Mona-Lisa! Love that you made it work with the ingredients you had access to šŸ¤—

For the adobo sauce, in case it helps in the meantime, we usually find it in a jar labelled ā€œchipotle sauceā€ at our local grocery store. It’s most similar to the adobo sauce used in the US, and ours is made from chipotle peppers blended with water, tomato, vinegar, and spices (no mayo in the ingredients). If you can’t find that either, a hot sauce like Sriracha or Tabasco works as a substitute!✨

Ah thanks, then I'll look into that the next time I need it. But I think here in Germany most chipotle-style sauces are kind of mayo-based..? šŸ¤” well, maybe I find something of just use some hot sauce substitute or make my weird concoction again, haha!

Again. A delicious and so easy to make meal from PUL. Thank you so much! I'll add arepas on my monthly food plan šŸ˜
As an addition I mixed vegan feta and vegan yogurt with fresh lime juice and pepper as a sauce, then put the jackfruit mix inside and some canned corn. Oh and of course the pickled onions from the app (also delicious). Thank you again, as always: absolutely a-ma-zing!

I cannot believe how incredibly delicious these are! Top 10 PUL recipe in my book!

Meike - June 12, 2025, 9:02 p.m.

Made these tonight. Delicious! Could not find the corn meal, so I used corn tortillas instead of the arepas, which was still really good. 10/10 recommended!
