Erwtensoep, a traditional Dutch dish also known as pea soup, is a thick and hearty soup made with split peas, celeriac, and leeks, often accompanied by smoked sausage. Traditionally served with rye bread topped with bacon, cheese, or butter, we’ve recreated this comforting winter classic using plant-based alternatives for the traditional ingredients.

Wow! This took me on a trip down memory lane. It really tastes like THE erwtensoep from my childhood. My mom even wanted to taste it, while she normally doesn’t like vegan dishes. We used to use the ‘can the spoon stay upright on its own’ test back in the day to see if the soup is done. This recipe definitely passed that test. 5/5 ⭐️ for this lovely tasting nostalgia.

This is so yummy!! Takes me back to the 90s when I was living in Nederland when this was one of my favorite meals!

It's just like the German "Erbsensuppe", traditionally served when you're buying a Christmas tree - at least here in Northern Germany :) We had to let it cook for about 40 min longer but it was so delicious! Thank you :)

Ooou love that, Oliver! 🎄 so glad the soup was enjoyed, and thanks for flagging the cooking time. We've heard a few similar reviews, so we've increased the cooking time. Thanks so much for helping to improve our recipes! 🤗

It was delicious! My dutch partner loved it. However, to get the right texture, I had to cook it for 1 hour and half more. Did I do something wrong? Was it necessary maybe to pre-soack the split peas?

Heyy Milena! So glad you and your partner enjoyed it, and thanks for the patience 🥰 Split peas can vary in cooking time depending on how old they are or how they’ve been stored (plus if they are whole vs. split). Sometimes they just need longer to soften, so simmering for extra time was the right call. Pre-soaking isn’t necessary, but it can help speed things up next time ☺️

Perfect for a typical autumnal rainy sunday 💚 Never a true lover of ‘snert’ myself, someone surprised me as they served it Indonesian style with rice and sambal 🤩 Since then I have been determined to try it out myself. These flavours are exactly right. Thanks so much!!
I did have a small ‘problem’ with the thickness, as it was very soup-y when I finished. The longer I left it alone, the thicker it got, so it was fine in the end. Next time I’ll try to cook every step uncovered, see if that helps.

O, forgot to ask: what sausages do you use? I used the vegan rookworst from Unox, and it was fine, but I’m wondering if you have a better substitute 😊

Heyy Regina, oops we totally missed this message 🤦♀️ thanks for your patience with this question and for sharing your experience with the recipe!
Cooking the soup for longer sounds like a good call. We've heard a few similar reviews, so we've bumped up the cooking time for the soup bit. For the vegan sausages, we used the "Vegetarische Slager Vegan roockworst" that we picked up from Albert Heijn, but any brand that you enjoy will do ☺️

Thanks for your reply and tip! Will give the roockworst from Vegetarische Slager a try 😊

I've never made it myself but this brings me right back to my childhood. It's a really comforting and hearty winter meal. Dutch dishes don't deserve a "looks award" but a "comfy award" could be in place for this one

That’s such a lovely way to put it! Dutch dishes really do shine in the comfort department. We’re so glad this one brought back warm memories for you, Jonathan 🥰
