This vegan chocolate Swiss roll features a light, chocolatey sponge rolled around a rich and creamy chocolate frosting - a delightful balance of elegance and comfort. Youâd never guess itâs plant-based, yet itâs just as indulgent and satisfying as the classic version. Perfect for celebrations or whenever youâre craving something special, this treat feels fancy without being overly complicated.

Hello! Thank you for this awesome recipe! đ I'm planning to try it. Can psyllium be a substitute for xanthan gum, or should I just omit it as suggested in previous comments?
PUL Team - Oct. 13, 2025, 4:31 a.m.
So glad youâre planning to try it, Patrick, hope you and your daughter love it đ We havenât tested this recipe with psyllium, and since it behaves quite differently from xanthan gum, itâs hard to say how it might turn out.
The xanthan helps give the cake a bit more flexibility when rolling. If you donât have any on hand, you can try leaving it out. The cake may be a touch more delicate, but still delicious!

I made the dough for the base for a SchwarzwÀlderkirsch Torte. (I left out the xanthan gum.) It turned out perfect! The cake was fluffy and chocolaty - perfect for my use!

So incredibly delicious!! I found the amount of chocolate frosting was way too much for the entire cake. This was my first time making a swiss cake roll. It was very fun!

Can you do a YouTube video of this, please?
PUL Team - June 7, 2025, 3:55 p.m.
Hi Rashmi, thanks for the request! While we don't have videos for exclusive recipes on the app, you can find step-by-step pictures under the "Make" feature. In case you haven't already seen it, you can access this by clicking the red "Make" button at the bottom of the screen đ€âš

Thank you for writing in! I am regular user of this brilliant app. I was wondering if there could be a video that shows how you fold the cake without breaking it. I learn better with videos, hence the request. But I appreciate your system in place. Itâs totally okay that you canât make a video of this at this point. Thank you for letting me know and thank you for all the lovely recipes you put out here.

I second Rashmi's video request! I know there are already some videos to certain recipes in the app. Having a video for this cake would be great especially now with the holiday seasons coming!

Thanks for bumping the request, Yasemin! Perhaps one day we can share a YouTube video for this cake đ€

Very tasty! I have just prepared this cake for tomorrow's holiday and stole a slice to try it đ€đ€. Unfortunately, it broke when I rolled it up again. But that only motivates me to try this recipe more often, because (let's be honest) it doesn't matter whether it's intact or broken: this cake tastes fantastic and I'm pretty sure everyone is going to appreciate it đ€đ„°

Hey Sarah, so glad you enjoyed it! In case it helps for next time, be sure to roll the cake while itâs still warm and let it cool completely in the rolled-up shape. This really helps it ârememberâ the curve đ«

Hi, could you swap the xanthan gum with cornstarch? The cake looks delicious đ
PUL Team - March 18, 2025, 10:35 p.m.
Hey Valerie, we wouldn't suggest substituting the xanthan for cornstarch. You can omit the xanthan gum completely. It helps with the flexibility of the cake, but we have tried versions without it and found they were just fine. Hope you enjoy the cake âșïž
Hello, can we swap xanthan gum with agar agar powder and using the same quantity? I'm not sure I can find the xanthan gum but would love to try this recipe đ
