Would love to try this recipe but gluten free oats are not sold in Australia. What would you use to substitute?

Hey Gypsy! Just so I understand, are you looking for gluten-free oats because you have a gluten allergy? Oats are naturally gluten-free, but they’re often processed in facilities that also handle wheat, which can lead to cross-contamination. That’s why certified gluten-free oats are recommended for people with celiac disease or a diagnosed gluten intolerance.
If you don’t have an allergy, regular rolled oats will work great here (no need to get a certified gf version). From what I was able to find online for the Australian market, it seems oats labelled as “wheat free,” “uncontaminated,” or “pure” may be free from wheat, rye, and barley cross-contact. “Coeliac Australia” has more information on this, if you’d like to check which brands meet their recommendations. I hope this helps for now 🫶

Unfortunately 'wheat free oats' still say they contain gluten on the label, so it's a bit confusing and not worth the risk for me. Do you have a substitute ingredient for the granola?

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 16, 2025, 5:03 p.m.

Hey Gypsy, aw sorry to hear! Because oats are the main ingredient in this granola, it’s tricky to suggest a perfect 1:1 swap. If you're unable to find other brands that offer certified gluten-free oats, yu could try quinoa flakes, rice flakes, or lupin flakes. They miiight work, but again we haven’t tested them, so it’s hard to say with certainty. Let us know how it goes if you try any of those out!

Made this a couple of times now. I love a nutty granola! Def don’t skip on the almond flower though — did that once and there were not clusters to speak of. Otherwise, really nice, simple and quick to make.

Oh this is such a big compliment, Monika! So happy to hear the granola was a success 👏

Do you recommend not turning the granola half way through baking, like with other recipes? Also, 20 min seemed too much for my granola and it’s more hazelnut colour than golden. Was that too long in the oven?

PUL small logo PUL Team - June 13, 2025, 4:30 p.m.

Hiya Anne-marie! Indeed, for this particular recipe we didn't recommend stirring halfway to help larger clusters form. Though you can always stir if you prefer and don't mind some of the clusters breaking apart.

As for th granola over-cooking, I wonder if the oven settings could have caused this? We use conventional heat, so the symbol on our oven shows the top and bottom heating without the fan, with the pan in the middle rack of the oven. If you use an option with a fan, also called convection bake, this can cause the granola to cook too fast, and usually the baking time needs to be dropped by quite a bit to ensure it doesn't over-bake. I hope this helps for now! 🫶✨
