This soup draws its inspiration from the rich cuisines of North Africa. The chickpeas and lentils make this dish protein-packed and hearty, while an array of spices, harissa, and zesty lemon juice create a harmonious balance of heat and brightness.

It is one of my favourites and I made it many times before. But today I forgot to buy the harissa paste! With a quick online search I figured out how to make your own and it was excellent. By the time of serving I also had no fresh coriander left, but mint worked really well.

Incredibly delicious, the broth is so tasty! I am a big fan of brothy soups (instead of ones that are very creamy) so this one really hit the spot. I used 75% of the recommended lentil amount to make sure it would be brothy enough for me and it turned out just right.
The harissa and cinnamon combo is sooo good.
Thanks for the delicious recipe dear Pick up limes ❤️

I’m eating it as I type. Very tasty, and as someone described it, zesty. I think the vegan sour cream would be a good cooling element. But I am really enjoying it as it.

This soup is amazing! I added 3 cloves of minced garlic toward the end of sautéing the celery/carrot/onion as well as a tablespoon of minced sun-dried tomatoes when adding the spices. I also added nearly two additional cups of water to make it more broth. I think the veggies I used were a bit large though! Wonderful recipe!
Chloe - July 23, 2025, 6:31 a.m.
Also used vegan “not chicken” bouillon cubes to make the broth instead of buying cartoned broth.

Yayyy so thrilled that the harissa soup is being enjoyed, Chloe! Your additions and swaps sound absolutely delicious 🙌

So easy to make and so flavoursome. The mix of spices is perfect. I don't like chilli heat so I didn't add any harissa but it still worked. Delicious.

It funny your soup reminded me of my wife’s harira. The recipe is very similar. We use fresh grated ginger 1 tbs., tomato paste instead of harissa, a small amount of orzo or rice, I was surprised that there was no garlic in this recipe we use 2 to 5 cloves depending on the season. The sequence is different. We bloom the spices before putting the cilantro in and sometimes we split it with parsley and coriander. This all goes in and is cooked for a minute or 2 before adding the lentils and broth. The other variation is the tomato fresh is best but if not add celery leaves with rib and tomatoes to blender and liquify. This is added after lentils are cooked about the same time the canned chickpeas are added. The last thing is mix 1 tbs. of flour in water. Stir it into the broth. It is a thickener but it adds a silkiness to the soup. Other variations up to 1 lbs. of fresh tomatoes and saffron if you have some and she would use ghee sometimes. Otherwise the quantities were the same. Here again my granddaughter says yummy. Which for this nutritious recipe it’s a winner. Thank you.

I followed the recipe and really enjoy the soup itself! I prefer my food very flavorful and packing a punch, so I would personally just add more harissa for a bit of an oomph. This will definitely be a soup that I make a freeze for future dinners when I don’t feel like cooking!
